Do I Need Web 2.0

I cannot believe that next week is the last class and this semester is almost over. I have learned a lot from this class and it affect my attitude toward the technology as well. I like Kyle's point of view about the emerging technology, especially web.2.0. Technology always keeps changing and even more faster and faster everyday, but one thing that has never change is the fact that whatever technology it's only a tool. Yesterday our tool was static web, today our tool is web 2.0, and what about tomorrow.
It is matter and we have to keep update with the new tools out there since we choose to be in this profession, but we have to be smart to choose and use it.The newer thing isn't always better.

I know that for this class we focus on the new technology especially web 2.0 , but some subject or topic doesn't need web 2.0 platform. It seems funny when someone try to put all the content into the web 2.0 when it's not necessary because it doesn't have any strong idea about interacting activity and actually maybe that particular project still works effectively without any interaction with the user. I still love to go to some websites that have a good content and I learned a lot from all the information they provide, even though I cannot make a comment, or do other interacting activity.I found a lot of website that use web 2.0 and then end up don't have any useful information as they intended. They posted a few information and then a few people left some useless comments. If it ends up like that I prefer to go to old fashion website that has a rich information.Think about it, how many percentage of the visitors want or like to comment? Why they want to go to our website? Do they just want to get information they need and finish or do they want to participate? So, if we find out that mostly users don't really want to waste they time to make a comment or anything, they just want to get information they need why bother to use web 2.0. I think web 2.0 is very powerful tools in many ways but not for everything.

Project Progress

I almost done with my final project but I am not sure how far I have to do. My project is teaching a new language so it has a lot of contents and take a lot of time to complete everything. So all I do is selling my idea and showing some dummy pages to show screen design, information design and interaction design. Another thing I tried to develop is using screencasting software for my project.Mostly people use screen cast for teaching softwares, how to use the websites. How can I use screen cast for teaching language? I have finished this piece of work and it's ready to show. Although it isn't perfect but at least I found another way to use this program for education.

PBworks

I didn't attend class this week because I was sick.I went to ilearn and found that we have to sign up for PBworks and then upload the expert presentation. I heard about PBworks before from classmate from last semester but I haven't had a chance to try, so this is time.First thing I like about PBworks is that it's super fast and easy to sign up which is great. After I sing in, I saw all pages that have been set up and I opened the screencast page, then I clicked upload file. I uploaded the video demonstration on how to use iShowU because Tina already uploaded the Powerpoint. Then I didn't know where my video go because it didn't appear in the screencast page and this was confusing me. I tried to find where was my video; after I found it, I clicked move because I wanted to move it to screencast page but there was no choice for that so I moved it to video folder. I will spend sometime to learn how to use it after finish this semester. I read some reviews about PBworks and this is a link

Online Class

How can we improve the online live class?

Well, overall I think we did good on our online session on April 15; all the presentors did pretty good on their presentations and we did a lot of discussion and cover several topics. As I have already mentioned in the preious post that I really like to
attend class online for the seminar classes like 830, 801 or 800 class because I don't really like to talk in class due to my bad English.Actually, even the classes in Thailand, I didn't talk much also. Lots of good thing about online class: when we took a 15
minutes break I started cooking and was continue with it while I was listening to the presentation. That 's cool! I put my laptop on the counter top and was able to chat while I was waiting for bringing the soup the boil. I replaced the traveling time by doing my regular stuff and other classes' works. However, there were several issues about the synchronous class room and I think mostly are the technical problems like audio, video, how to use some functions and features. And one thing that bothered me was when a lot of people were chating in the same time because text went so fast and sometime couldn't tell who talked to whom. I think these problem can be fixed by we have to learn about the program and all equipment needed before we start using it but I think our class was someting like on the job training as well because we were learning by doing. I cannot answer the question on how can we improve the online live class by now because I am still thinking about it. I hope we will have a better technology for distant learning in the near future but cost must be another issue.

Class Reflection

I think I should try twitter. After listened to the guest speaker from Socilatext, I feel much more positive about twitter and I want to use it as a marketing tool for my business.Even though personally I don't like this kind of thing,it sounds like a free good tool for promoting. I thought about its ability as a marketing tool as others social networking products before but my negative thought about it stopped me from trying. I found his presentation is interesting since I am interested in marketing and communication tools(education is also another type of communication).

I like the word "A Transparent World" and I agree that the web 2.0 technologies are one of the main force that drove us to this trend. We express ourselves more and wider.Recently, I discussed about political issue with my friends on facebook .One of my friend who I have known her for about 14 years but we have never talked about politic before and even had no idea about each other's attitude about politic. But now we all express ourselves and send our message to even more receivers.
As he said we can use twitter or other social networking tools for:
- status update
- ask
- share
- discover
- monitor
- And also promoting

And have to thank for the good question on why some organization felt when they tried to implement these kind of technologies. He said one of the main reason is they don't know how to use it for.I think this is very important because sometime we want to keep up date with technology or want to be in trend; we want to use because other people use but don't know excatly why we have to use, or how this technologies will benefit us.Then we can end up waste of time and resources.

Class Reflection: Personal Learning Environments

There were a lot of interesting topics from the expert presentations this week(March 25,10): Accessibility by Shri, Netop by Dustin and PLEs Personal Learning Environments by Klye.My most favorite is PLEs because we are all have our own learning environments and Klye did a very good for this presentation.I use igoogle as a mashup and add several windows in it, I have 6 email addresses, 4 free blogs and 3 websites, 3 youtube accounts, sign up for few social networking sites and a bunch of websites, using skype for international call and video chat and more.I keep update things in Thailand from my friends on facebook (and also fighting about political issues), online newspapers, lots of information goes direct to my emails. While I was listening to Klye,I was thinking about myself, my personal learning environment and I felt that my life are more crazy tan ever. I think now it's hard to seperate our private learning environment(outside school) and school environment because we are using almost the same sources of information. We google information for classes'works and for our personal needs. Although,we can say that the ilearn, myitec ning or this blog are for class, it has no rule saying that we cannot use them for personal need sometime. Now I want to organize my personal learning environments; I should eliminate some thing that not neccessary or redundane and add some new tools that answer my needs.
According to Educause, there are 7 things we should know about PLEs
1.What is it
2.Who is doing it
3.How does it work
4.Why is it significant
5.What are the downsides
6.Where is it go
7.What are the implications for teaching and learning

Xtranormal Movie

Fun! I think this website is easy to use and I like that I can sign up using my facebook account. After finished the movie, there are several ways to share the movie: like share to facebook, send email ,or copy code and embed it to website.I thought I can hit share to youtube and it will go to my youtube account but I think it went to the xtranormal channel instead since it didn't ask what is my youtube account. Moreover,it was pretty slow to render the movie and even longer if we want to download the file. But you can come back and download the file later the web will keep our video file for 3 days, so I got my file a next day after I requested it and I was able to upload that file to my youtube account. In general I think it's a good and fun site.

Connectivism

When I first read about connectivism I thought yes, that is what I do, I connect to people and/or computers to gather information to learn how to do something (eg: learn a new computer program) or to acquire knowledge to enable me to make an informed decision. We have to accept that formal education does not meet all of our needs…so we need to experiment with other ways of learning.

In the group discussion,we thought that actually connectivism is not something new at all. A lot of sources stated that connectivism is a learning theory for digital age that is not true since we all have learned so many things by connecting to others via different types of channels such as from peer,TV,newspaper, etc. I do agree that these emerging technologies: google, youtube, blog, social networking sites have been used to facilitate and expand this concept greatly.

Here some critism of connectivism that I found it's interesting.
A challenge to connectivism

Networks are important but haven't changed learning so much that we need to throw away all of the established learning theories and replace them with a brand new one. How do we test whether a new idea is an interesting speculation or something more substantial? A good learning theory should:
- contribute to a theory/practice spiral of curriculum / learning reform,
- provide a significant new perspective about how we see learning happening
- represent historical alternatives accurately.

Connectivism fails on the first count by using language and slogans that are sometimes “correct” but are too generalised to guide new practice at the level of how learning actually happens.

Connectivisim does contribute to a general world outlook but we already have theories and manifestos for that view (systems theory, chaos theory, network theory, cluetrain manifesto), so we don't need a new -ism in this respect.

Finally, connectivism misrepresents the current state of established alternative learning theories such as constructivism, behaviourism and cognitivism, so this basis for a new theory is also dubious.

Connectivism Video Podcast

I made this poor video to reflect some ideas about connectivism.Actually,I shame to upload this video to my blog but...anyways.I grabbed all the images from internet but forgot where I got them from, so if someone see this video and find that the image I used is your, tell me your link I will put it in this blog.I used some part of the songs I like "wind of change", Scorpions and "Imagine", John Lennon. Well, I will film something authentic when I have time(someday).

Project Idea : Thai Lesson for Beginners

This is the same project that I am working on 801 and also my for 894 in the Fall 2010.
Here is a my brife proposal:

Thai Lesson for Beginners

Background

To help non–Thai people who need to or would like to be able to communicate in Thai language, for instance expatriates, retirees in Thailand, spouses and children of Thai, by providing beginning Thai lessons. These lessons will include: the Thai alphabet, basic vowels, how to make simple words and how to pronounce them. Lots of non-native Thai speakers have learned Thai only by trying to memorize some basic vocabulary or sentences without knowing the basics of Thai writing and reading. Moreover, most Thai language books and websites teach how to pronounce Thai sounds by associating them with English sounds which is a cause of problems to the learners later because Thai sounds and English sounds are not exactly the same. These are the main reasons why many foreigners who stay in Thailand for a long period (more than 2 years) still cannot pronounce Thai correctly, speak more varieties of sentences, or even make accurate sentences.

Objectives
to be able to do the following:
• Read the often used 28 Thai letters correctly.
• Read the basic single 17 Thai vowels correctly.
• Pronounce basic Thai words correctly without associating sounds and letters from their native language.
Delivery system and Media Selections
This project will be delivered online using web base platform, multimedia, and emerging online technologies. For instance, animation, streaming video, audio , and web conferencing tool.

For more specifically for the emerging technologies that I might apply to this project are included: webboard or blog, youtube channel for this project, podcast, screencasting,
skype.

Meaning

I think the last sense "Meaning" is the very important one.I think about if I had money more than enough or I knew that I have a short time left before I die.I am sure that I would done differently if I have not had to worry about money or I knew that I am going to die soon. Why? I think because I were not be afraid to take more risk ,this means I were able to do something more extreme and didn't have to compromise.Back to the instructional design, meaning for me is the most important part.Although the design so cool, we apply appropriate technologies and spend a lot of time to develop the lesson but if it's meaningless for the target audiences then we might waste time and effort for nothing. The most websites that I visit regularly, they are all meaningful, useful, and helpful. Some of them might have a bad design or boring looking but they have content that I am looking for and that enough for me.

It must be the best if we develop the lesson that is rich of content and is well designed in the same time, but in the real life this not easy at all, especially when we work alone.I experienced that myself when I built my second website that I wanted to cover all information about the topic.Only gathered and prepared all the content it took me almost a year, and what about the design part started in graphic program and brought all to web authoring program. Finally I finished it but still have a lot of things that need to be fixed but I don't have time (lazy)to do. But if I can change my attitude and be aware that I don't have a lot of time left, I might be more aggressive with my works.

Minds on Fire

This article reminded me what I have learned from ITEC 800 class. The concept of social learning, learning community,or connectivism, for me they are almost the same idea and I totally agree that these concepts are very effective way to learn this day. I enjoyed reading this paper, so many inspiring idea and example. If I have time, I will explore more all those websites (I hope).I like to quote some sentences from this article, the ideas that get in to my mind.

"Mastering the field of knowledge involves not only "learning about" the subject but also "learn to be" a full participant in the field" This is so true when I think about my experiences. What I learned 4 years and 2 years from my previous degree couldn't compare to what I have learned from the works. This idea is related to another sentence ,"...the process of seeking the knowledge when it is needed in order to carry out a particular situated task."

The second life is also a great tool for education,I hope in the near future we will have Thai websites that bring this idea to encourage Thai children to learn and explore more about science since Thailand still don't have enough human resources in the science field.

Intergrating 6 Sense into the Instructional Design

From"The Whole New Mind" Pink believes that we are moving into a conceptual age and this means the requirements for a desirable employee have changed, placing more value on whole brain thinkers. If this is the case, the next step is applying right brain-directed practices in the educational system. Pink identifies six senses that make up whole brain thinkers. They are design, story, meaning, empathy, play and symphony.

not just function, but also design.
not just argument, but also story.
not just focus, but also symphony.
not just logic, but also empathy.
not just seriousness, but also play.
not just accumulation, but also meaning.

DESIGN
How to bring all the element of the lesson together in order to encourage engagement with the lesson. How to make the new knowledge that's attractive to the learners. And the lesson must be easy the use and understand. The elememts might include: content, flow of the content, medium, tools, technologies, look and feel. All these have to fit with the subject and the learners.

STORY
Give a basic example telling the learners the stories that illustrate the concept.
The interesting story is easy to memorize and understand the concept easire.
On the other hand, ask for student to tell their own story that related to the topic.

SYMPHONY
Design classroom projects that cross disciplines.
Ask for the application of skills and concepts to genuine problems.
Use inductive learning strategies (learning by doing).

EMPATHY
Peer feedback, critique, group discussion can help the learners understand others view points and problems
Give students service-learning and volunteer opportunities to help other students that struggle with the lesson.

PLAY
Bring some fun activities in to the lesson but still relevant to the subject

MEANING
Explain or give some example why the lesson is important to the learner and how can they apply what they will learn to the real life or how can this lesson improve their life.

UI & UX

I learned a lot from the guest speaker from Meebo. It's interesting how she compared the development of classical music with the development of technology. The last part when she talked about her teal works at Meebo is my most favorite. It is a good example of how to design the interface and I am always interested in design aspects (something like layout, color, pattern); although I am not very good at it. I wrote down some interesting idea that she mentioned; some ideas that I can't agree more.

"Simple unified voice", this is very important when we have to work as a team and have to make the design that represent "Brand." The look and feel of everything that represent our brand and all elements that will create the user experiences must be consistency. I love the word "Simple"; this is very important impact to the user experiences. How can we design the interface that looks cool and also simple to use.

"Things that you can do dose not mean that you should do" , Sounds like me. Yes when I learn some new skill or I know how to do something new, sometime I tend to add all of them to my work; although it's might not necessary at all. Why? I think sometime we want to prove or show that we can do so many things, we have a lot of skills,we are sophisticated. As I said I did that a lot when I learn something new. I think about Flash, a lot of web sites added too many flashy things into their page, when it's doesn't necessary at all and a lot of time this kind of thing distracting or even annoying the users.

Screencasting Software: iShowU

I and Tina were working together on screencasting software and we both have never used this kind of software before. So, we designed to work on iShowU since be both are mac users and iShowu is one of the cheapest screencasting program for mac. The video tutorial was rcorded by using ishowU. I tried to upload slides with the video embedded but didn't work properly, so I seperated them.

I made a short presentation focused on the design for business and design for our future.

How Can Design Thinking Approach Improve Business

Here videos I found on how to incoporate design into business.

This video is pretty long so if you don't have time, you can start from around 00.21.He talks about how can analytical thinking person(left brain) and intutive thinking(right brain) working together and bring good side from both to the business.

When a lot of people think about the word"design", they might think about something that related to piece of artwork, something more tangible like graphic things, fashion design, or product design. But actually, design can be the way how can we approach to problems as well.Design thinking person are open minded to any solution, they are more flexible and free from constrant.

A Whole New Mind: The Middle Way

After finished the first half of this book "A Whole New Mind" by daniel H.Pink, I found some points that I cannot agree with the writer. I fully understand what the point that the writer want to sell and I strongly agree that the ability to see the big picture and creativity are so important not only today but for the whole period of our human development. The target audiences for this book of course Americans so I am not the target audience for this book. The way the writer try to claim why the right brain directed thinking is so important for this era or what he calls "Conceptual age" by blaming the abundant of goods, machines that can replace the human, and the cheaper wage labors in the developing countries in Asia.I don't think this is a good opening to the selling point.I think most people can answer these questions:
- Who created the intelligent machines that can produce a ton of product and can do the job that human used to do faster and cheaper?
- Who decided to relocate the factories or outsourcing some works to the developing countries in order to make more profit and use the natural resources from the poor countries and of course left all the pollution over there as well.

Another point, I think the thing he call the right brain directed thinking is not anything new and it's not just become more important this day. These kind of abilities: seeing the big pictures, sense of beauty, designing, creativity, etc., have been part of mankind since the ancient period.Think about how can the Egyptians from 3,000 - 5,000 years ago were able to create one of the most amazing architectures and what about their technique to preserved the body for new life after death. This can prove that this kind of thinking ability played the important role since the early civilization.

http://www.jaunted.com/files/admin/egypt5.jpg

From agriculture age to industrial age, then from industrial age to information, and from information age to conceptual age, all the movement from stage to another were always driven from the new innovation in that time.Don't the new innovations come from someone imagination and the strong believe that his or her crazy idea is possible?

I do not believe that the right brain people will rule the future. Yes right brain functions are very important but we still need the left brain persons. We need a balance between these two skills and I am sure a lot of us already good at both and we just have to choose what kind of skill we need in the particular job and situation. If we realize that one of our skill is weaker than another, how can we strengthen that skill. Finally,if we cannot develop or improve the weaker skill, then learn to work with other people that can complement us.The bottom line is we only need the middle way, we need a balance for both inside each of us and balance in our whole society.

Week 4 Reflection : How Social Networking Sites Affect Google

One point that we discussed in class and I found it's interesting and want to do some more research is that Google lost their web finding number to Facebook.Although, this might not true by now but might be possible in the future.People do not search for information but they have been told about information and where are the sources for information from social networking websites like Facebook. I have never though about this point before but when I think about how many percentage of information I search from Google or elsewhere compare to the information that I have been told from Facebook, email, classes, blogs,RSS,etc., I found that they almost about same percentage. Although, I am not a heavy user of social networking sites,I still recieve a lot of information with searching for it. But for me I still prefer to spend time and searching for information I really need or interested in.
Full of meaningless information for me is not different from having unwanted clothes in the closet.

Here link about this topic I found http://www.suite101.com/blog/marcbitanga/how_social_networks_could_affect_googles_algorithm

Growing up with Google

After read through this article, I cannot agree more that very aspects change: student change, technologies change, time change,
education change, and attitude toward education change as well. I know that today education became one kind of businesses and students are customers. The customer oriented approach is not something new for the business sector, but when we have to apply this approach to education, I feel a little strange. Absolutely educators have to change the way they teach and adopt technologies into the classroom. We should use technology because it can enhance the learning, not because it's a trend or other people use them. The new thing is not always better.

I would like to quote some part of this article about an awareness of applying technologies into education.
"digital comfort does not necessarily mean technology proficiency"
"Just because students know how to open a web browser educators should not assume that everyone knows how to search for information."
"How do we ensure that students develop the critical thinking skills necessary to survive and thrive in age when anything can be found on Internet"

Franky,I would not have signed up for twitter if I hadn't had to. Why? This kind of thing is not for me.
I don't want to expose my activities of the moment to the world; I am nobody then who care what am I doing.
No one in the world right now I want to follow. Although, I signed up for some social networking sites, I am not a big fan or crazy about these social networking things. I agree that we get some benefits from them but for me one or two must be enough. I hate when some friends invited me to join some new social networking site, more!-No!.

Let's go back to twitter,as a newcomer I found it's a bit confusing to use. The home page starts with 140 character tweets
"what's happening" that seems simple but when I post something, I don't know where it go and what else I can do besides this .How can I find someone who are interesting to follow? I just feel the twitters interface is not a user friendly when compare to Facebook (I hate the new interface on facebook as well). I think twitter is just good for entertainment, if people want a real information then go to blog to elsewhere .

I have read some reviews of twitter and I found them useful for the newcomers like me, here links below and I also share one article from American Jurnalism

week 3

Today class discussed on several issues: peer review, privacy, adding tag in our blog post, real world topic for the final project, etc.
I think the main discussion was "privacy".For me every point of views from our classmates are all right but they are only from different angle or different perspective. The situation in the video that the principal can check what students are doing on Internet while they are in the classroom and suppose to use Internet to study is fine. Students must know that what they are expected to do and they should do in class. But the point is why didn't teachers tell them that they were watching while they were using Internet in class.I don't know if there are some reason why school didn't inform the students in the first place. It might be part of research or experiment or other reason.

I agree with Elizabeth that when people know that they are being watched while they are teaching or other kind of works, people are tend to pay more attention and try to perform the best as they can. Again, this case for me is acceptable because this is in the work place.I understand that this thing is annoying and I don't like either but I just think it's understandable. If the workers, students or whoever do what they are suppose to do in the certain time and space then why they have to care that they are being watched or not. However, this has a certain limit when and where teachers, employers can monitor what their students and staff are doing. This is a link about workplace privacy and employee monitoring

Emerging Technologies in E-learning

After I read this chapter"Emerging Technologies in E-learning", the 2 opposite side of thought came to my mind.
The positive one,I was amazed how these technologies can enhance and facilitate learning, and our life. I have never used online for a formal education before but I decided to attend 801 class online using Elluminate since I can save $4 for train, save about 2 hours to travel to school. Since English is my second language and I understand the topic better when I have more time to think about it carefully,I don't feel comfortable to discuss in class ,most of the time I have nothing to say; moreover, for this kind of class don't have any hand on skill and very one can access to the same learning material and discussing forum. Then online option using technologies is suit my leaning style. But for hand on class like learn how to use a software I think face to face class room still works better.Although,I can learn a lot of software online like lynda.com,I learn better form traditional classroom. love that these emerging technology provide the learners more alternative to choose what is the best way to learn. We are all unique that must be nice if we can play around with technologies that we can access and customize our own learning solution.

I also like the idea that Wiki sites adopted some useful technique from the commercial site.According to the reading, Wikipidia adopted rating systems from Ebay to help solving problem on how to verify the accuracy of each educational resource. This is the important point and as I am the one who often rely on information on Wikipedia, how can I know that the content is accurate since anyone can create the content. As I am a Ebay buyer,I like this system and I think this rating system can solve this problem in some degree.

For the negative thought, after I read through the list of these emerging technologies,I felt there are overwhelming numbers of technologies I have to catch up if I want to be part of this profession. Several terms in the list that I have never heard about before like: mashups, swarmcasting, long tail.Nowadays, technologies change very fast, not only have to keep up date with brand new technologies, but also software that we already used keep up dating the new versions.I like to keep track how many time a week my computer ask me to update new software. These scared me since I am looking forward to work as a structional designer in the near future.A lot of thing we learn to day like software or some technologies might be gone or out of date in the next few years.I know that we cannot stop learning but we have to learn even faster in this flooding of information and technologies age.

Week 2 Reflection

This week is very interesting, so many ideas from our classmates, video, and our guest speaker inspired me.
One idea that absolutely grabbed me is form our classmate,Ian.
He talked about the people who teach in the university level
they don't need to have teaching credential, degree or serious training in education
or how to teach people effectively. On the other hand, it is required for teachers in schools.
Since I am a foreigner, I don't know much about the educational system here in the US.
But what Ian said so this is same as what happen I my country,Thailand.
I used to teach undergraduate student in the university in Bangkok.
I have a master degree in Mass Communication and also experiences in the field,
so I qualified to teach in Mass Communication Department although I didn't have any degree in education.
The university provided a very short session on how to teach but I thought they was not very serious about it.
I taught so many student with out knowing deeply how to teach effectively.

The same thing happened when I was a undergraduate student (political science),
I studied in one of the best university in Thailand. All professors have high profile,
99%(from around 20) have doctoral degree form the top schools from the US.,UK,or France.
It's very difficult to get in and teach there, they need to have an outstanding academic background,
but nothing mention about the teaching skill. So, some of them have never realized that
student don't understand what they try to teach, and some class so boring or too many information
to remember in one session.

It would be nice if my old professors have a chance to watch the video that we watched in class
"21st Century Schools: Learning in the Digital Age". I am grade that I did and sure I am going to be
a better teacher than what I was before.

What is Web 2.0

Our first day we talked about "what is web 2.0" which was some of us might thing this is an old story since
technology oriented person started to talk about web 3.0. However, this topic is quite interesting for me.
Why? Seriously, I had never heard about the word "web 2.0" before until I started my second master degree
here at ITEC,SFSU.

Although, I have been using social networking site: youtube, wikipedia,or blogs before, I did't know that
this kind of websites are called "web 2.0." So, what is web 2.0
According to wikipedia.org, "web 2.0 is commonly associated with web applications that facilitate
interactive information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design,[1] and collaboration on
the World Wide Web."

No surprise, this is about the same idea as what we talked about in our class(yes, because we have read
about it before form internet). But the most interesting thing is every group thought about it like a kind of
web site that users generate the content or user center. That's it.
